Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu and first views of Himalaya
The local guide meets up at the airport and we travel to Nagarkot, an about 2 hour drive from the airport. Here we stay at Country Villa 4* hotel with a sauna, spa and an extraordinary view of the Himalayas. We get a good rest after the journey and have dinner at the hotel.
Day 2: Sunrise and day hike
If waking up early we can watch the sun go up over the mountains while eating breakfast on the terrace. After a good breakfast we make a short drive to the point where we start our hike down to Nala Monastery where we have lunch with the lamas. The hike takes about 2 hours and crosses small villages and forests. Nalas ‘Dhakpo Sheydrub Ling’ Monastery is famous for its beautiful paintings and the lamas are happy to show us around. The monastery is not open to the public but due to personal contacts we are able to visit them.
After lunch we drive for about 20 minutes to the old trading town of Dhulikhel. We make a walk around the 16th century town to see the pagoda temples and the old structures. From here we continue up the 1000 steps long stairs to a Kali temple on top of a hill. We descend on the other side down a long downhill crossing forests and villages to reach Khavre Bhanjyang. We have tea before continuing the last stretch of our walk. We walk uphill to a small picturesque village. We cross the village and continue eastwards to the Vishuddhi Alaya Resort which will be our home for the coming 3 days. We check in and end the day with a good dinner.
Wellness Tour in Kathmandu and Khavre, 7 days
Meals at Vishuddhi Alaya are predominantly prepared from their own organically grown vegetables and consist of Nepalese as well as Western dishes. They avoid processed and packaged food and are using locally produced ingredients like ghee, mustard oil, locally grown grains, honey etc. The Namobuddha area is beautiful. The place is very quiet and pure. Its environment is clean and the natural air is fresh.
Day 3: Wellness and Buddhist pilgrimage
Before breakfast we have an one hour yoga session with Vishuddhi Alayas certified Iyengar yoga teacher. After breakfast we go for a guided walk through Vishuddhi Alaya’s organic gardening area and through its surrounding villages and forests. We come back to the resort to meet the highly skilled and experienced massage and well ness therapists trained at Ayurvedic schools. They will give you various therapies in a mix of ancient Ayurveda and modern spa therapy.
After another delicious lunch we start our walk to Namobuddha monastery (45 minutes one way). This is the place where Buddha in his previous life as Prince Semchen Chenpo (Great Being) sacrificed his own body to a starving tigress and her cubs. We also see the stupa where his remains are buried. We will sit in the large temple to see the afternoon ceremony performed every day by the many lamas living in the monastery.
After snacks, back at the Vishuddhi Alaya, we get yet another treatment by the spa therapists before the evening yoga session which is pranayama/ breathing/ restorative focused and after that dinner.
Day 4: Permaculture and picnic
After the morning Iyengar yoga and breakfast we make a short walk to Sanskriti Farm and Research Center. They will explain their way of permaculture and show their farm. We enjoy a delicious Nepali traditional lunch with the family and set off at an afternoon walk to Devisthan, a hilltop Hindu temple with stunning 360 degrees view over the mountains and hills. Here we have a snacks picnic with a view. Back at the resort we have another Pranayama yoga session before dinner.
Day 5: Ancient cities and art
After our daily morning Iyengar yoga pass and breakfast we start our journey back to Kathmandu. Parts of the road we walk, crossing orange orchards and villages. Other parts we travel by our 4×4 vehicle. We make a short break in the ancient town Panauti where we see the amazing wood carved structures and Hindu temple areas and yet another, longer, break in Bhaktapur. Bhaktapur is a World Heritage site famous for its extraordinary architecture and beautiful wood and pottery craft. Of course we also try out the creamy yoghurt with a secret recipe only produced in Bhaktapur. From Bhaktapur we drive Kathmandu and check in at our beautiful 5* hotel Yak & Yeti, located in the center of Kathmandu on the upmarket area of ‘Kings Way’. They have a fantastic garden and swimming pool, and a beautiful spa. The dinner is on your own tonight and you can choose to eat at one of the two beautiful restaurants at the hotel or to go out for food.
Day 6: Free time and exploring a Buddhist area
After breakfast we drive to the Tibetan Buddhist area Boudha to see the large World Heritage stupa and the monasteries around it. We have lunch at a rooftop restaurant by the stupa before coming back to the hotel. The afternoon is free and you can choose for example to stroll around for some shopping or to visit the beautiful Garden of Dreams, an old palace which has been turned into a restaurant and park. In the evening we have our farewell dinner together at a beautiful restaurant close to the hotel.
Day 7: Departure
The checkout time from the hotel is at 12, but you can store your luggage there and walk around in the town or ask your local guide for advice on how to spend the day until you need to go to the airport.
